Steroids are most common drug used in Psoriasis topically. Tablets and injections are also given in severe conditions. Systemic steroids like Triamnicolone are used in severe conditions in Psoriasis and mostly in Pemphigus vulgaris. Steroids are majorly used to decrease swelling and redness caused by lesions. Topical steroids are used in almost all type of psoriasis due to their immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties.
Topical steroids includes cream, ointment, foam, lotion, gel and spray. They are used due to odorless property and quick acting property (in smaller area and bigger area of skin). They provide quick relief from itching and inflammation. Topical steroids in longer use considered to be a double edged sword with serious local and systemic side effects. Steroids induced Avascular necrosis which is a serious condition that involves bone destruction and severe pain on the hip joint. Mostly femur head is commonly affected in Avascular necrosis.
Systemic side effects include Glucosorticoid induced adrenal insufficiency (GIAI) also one of the major side effects to be considered after a prolonged use. Hyperglycemia and Diabetes mellitus occur after a prologed used and high percutaneous absorption of topical steroids with person having hepatic disease.
As I told steroids are double edged sword, Topical steroids withdrawal symptoms like skin sensitivity, itching ,peeling ,pus filled bumps, infection and nodules under the skin. Non-skin synptoms include trouble sleeping, hairloss, tiredness and depression.
